Eastwood (England)
Eastwood is a town with a population of 18,000 in the Midlands of England, in Nottinghamshire, near the City of Nottingham. The name of the town first appears in an official document as ’Estwick’ in 1086. In the small settlement – at the beginning consisting of a mere 28 houses – the main activities of the population included grain farming, pottery, rope making and brick production. Eastwood’s development took off after 1830, with the construction of roads and railways as well as coal mining and the population grew to 4,500 by 1880. The present face of Eastwood was formed in the first half of the twentieth century. With the closure of coal mines and the railway in the second half of the century Eastwoods development lost momentum but today the town is a booming community again with new and exciting promise of the future. A famous native of the town is D. H. Lawrence, who formed the characters in his novels on the people of Eastwood. Eastwood has been our twin town since 2006.
