Baia Mare - Nagybánya (Romania)
Baia Mare (Nagybánya) is the seat of Maramures (Máramaros) County. The history of the town with a present population of 105,000 goes back to the 1300s. It is mentioned as a mining settlement for the first time in 1329. Thanks to its unique micro-climate several hundred hectares of its land are covered with chestnut tree forests. It has supported the tradition of the Chestnut Festival which is celebrated in October every year. The town is the political, economic and tourism centre of Máramaros County. Nagybánya has been our twin town since 1990.
