Szolnok Gallery

Szolnok Gallery

Originally the town’s synagogue, it was built by Lipót Baumhorn in Eclectic style in 1898. Since the 1970s, preserving the original architectural character of the building, one of the then biggest exhibition halls started operation with a definite artistic function. During its more than 25 years of operation, the gallery primarily accommodated art exhibitions, like the jubilee collective exhibition of the Artists’ Colony founded in 1902, the individual exhibitions of contemporary artists living in the colony, individual exhibitions of several outstanding domestic and foreign artists, and introductory shows of Estonian, Finnish, French and German artists and industrial applied artists connected to Szolnok through their towns’ twinnings. It is Szolnok Gallery that mostly houses the Art Triannuals organised since 1975, as well as larger historical, ethnographical and archaeological exhibitions, conferences and other museum and literary events and concerts. A total overhaul of the building was completed between 2003 and 2005 with money won in a European tender. The renovation keenly observed the restoration of the original state of the building both in its colours and the formation of the environment.
